At its twenty-first session, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation in which it requested the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation to continue to report, on an annual basis, to the Human Rights Council and to submit an annual report to the General Assembly (Human Rights Council resolution 21/2).

The present report is submitted to the General Assembly by the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, Catarina de Albuquerque, in accordance with Human Rights Council resolution 16/2, in which the Council encouraged her to report annually to the General Assembly.

I have the honour to refer to article 21 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, according to which the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, established pursuant to the Convention, " shall, through the Economic and Social Council, report annually to the General Assembly of the United Nations on its activities " .
