In terms of supporting gender mainstreaming in a specific sector, the workshop on gender statistics for policy monitoring and benchmarking (Italy, October 2000) provided an opportunity for participating countries to assess how suitable and relevant their gender statistics are, as a basis for policies and for monitoring progress, and to what extent the gender perspective has been incorporated into their national policies and programmes.
