By resolution 1998/58, entitled “Situation of human rights in Haiti”, the Commission on Human Rights, inter alia, invited its independent expert, Mr. Adama Dieng, to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-third session and to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-fifth session on developments in the human rights situation in Haiti.

At its substantive session of 1998, the Economic and Social Council endorsed the Commission’s decision to extend for a further year the mandate of the Special Representative of the Commission on the situation of human rights in Rwanda, and to request the Special Representative to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-third session and to the Commission at its fifty-fifth session (Council decision 1998/265).

The joint working paper on article 7 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (E/CN.4/Sub.2/1998/4) was submitted to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination at its fifty-third session and to the Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities at its fiftieth session.
١١ - قُدمت ورقة العمل المشتركة بشأن المادة ٧ من الاتفاقية الدولية للقضاء على جميع أشكال التمييز العنصري )E/CN.4/Sub.2/1998/4( إلى لجنة القضاء على التمييز العنصري في دورتها الثالثة والخمسين وإلى اللجنة الفرعية لمنع التمييز وحماية اﻷقليات في دورتها الخمسين.

The Council also approves the Commission's requests to the Special Rapporteur to report to the Commission on the future need for human rights field officers, with the understanding that the Commission will, at its fifty-fifth session, reassess such need, and to report his findings and recommendations to the General Assembly at its fifty-third session and to the Commission at its fifty-fifth session.

By decision 1998/266, the Council, taking note of Commission on Human Rights resolution 1998/69, endorsed the Commission’s decision to extend for a further year the mandate of the Special Representative of the Commission on the situation of human rights in Rwanda and approved the Commission’s request to the Special Representative to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-third session and to the Commission at its fifty-fifth session.

1. The present report is submitted pursuant to paragraph 21 of General Assembly resolution 52/137 of 12 December 1997, entitled “Situation of human rights in Myanmar”, in which the Assembly requested me to continue my discussions with the Government of Myanmar in order to assist in the implementation of that resolution, and to report to the Assembly at its fifty-third session and to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-fourth session.
