In 1997, following the appointment of a Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, the Office of the Focal Point for Women was transferred from the Office of Human Resources Management to the Office of the Special Adviser.

In view of the very limited resources available to the Office of the Focal Point for Women, the Secretary-General reiterates the request made in his previous report to the General Assembly (A/49/587 and Corr.1) for material support in the form of the secondment of experts from Governments or in the form of resources to assist the Office of the Focal Point in undertaking essential studies for the implementation of the plan of action.
