My delegation would like to express its support for the draft resolution entitled “Nuclear disarmament” by becoming one of the sponsors of this initiative, particularly to support efforts to achieve the laudable objective of nuclear disarmament.

The progress on civil and political rights permitted by the current democratization process was being undermined by lack of progress and, following structural adjustment, even reverses in the area of economic and social rights.

Mr. Mesdoua (Algeria) (spoke in Arabic): The United Nations commemorated this morning the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, at which all speakers, whether representatives of organizations or major political bodies, recognized the need for the international community to continue to be involved in this issue in order to reach a just, lasting and comprehensive settlement.
