Let me, on behalf of the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies, congratulate Mr. Han Seung-soo and Mr. Annan and allow me at the same time to remind us all that the very first Nobel Peace Prize was given 100 years ago to an outstanding volunteer, Mr. Henry Dunant, who lived his life as a humble person dedicated to the cause of relieving human suffering.

Henri Dunant's Memory of Solferino, written after a visit to the battlefield of Solferino in 1859, dragged the brutalities of war into public view in a manner which shook contemporary civilization out of its complacency and triggered off the development of modern humanitarian law.
ولقد جرﱠت مذكرات سلفرينو التي كتبها هنري دونانت بعد زيارته لميدان معركة سلفرينو في عام ١٨٥٩، وحشية الحرب وألقتها أمام ناظر الرأي العام على نحو هز الحضارة المعاصرة فأخرجها مما ربعت به من قناعة فبدأ من ثم تطور القانون اﻹنساني المعاصر.
