The purpose of the note is to initiate and facilitate discussions on preparatory activities for formulating a common vision for the future contribution of science and technology for development.

In resolution 1995/4, ECOSOC invited the Commission on Science and technology for development to give consideration to ways and means of taking advantage of the twentieth anniversary of the Vienna Conference on Science and technology for development for the formulation of a common vision regarding the future contribution of science and technology for development.
فقد دعا المجلس الاقتصادي والاجتماعي في قراره ٥٩٩١/٤ اللجنة المعنية بتسخير العلم والتكنولوجيا ﻷغراض التنمية إلى إيلاء الاعتبار لسبل ووسائل الاستفادة من الاحتفال بالذكرى السنوية العشرين لانعقاد مؤتمر اﻷمم المتحدة لتسخير العلم والتكنولوجيا ﻷغراض التنمية في فيينا من أجل وضع رؤية مشتركة لمستقبل مساهمة العلم والتكنولوجيا في أغراض التنمية.

49. Capacity-building was a central issue in the formulation of a common vision regarding the future contribution of science and technology for development (A/54/270, sect. V). To that end, explicit and coherent national science, technology and innovation policies and appropriate international frameworks were needed.
