23. While there is evidence that most countries in Europe are aware of the magnitude of the problem and are committed to addressing it, the Special Rapporteur emphasized that the intolerance and discrimination experienced by Muslims and Arabs in the European Union remain a major human rights issue.

Mr. Akram Zaki (Pakistan) said that the recent report of the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance on the situation of Muslims and Arabs in various parts of the world (E/CN.4/2006/54) had noted with concern the legitimization of the racist and xenophobic ideology of extreme right-wing parties for political ends.
