With respect to the 10 persons arrested at the house of Kamal Mekki Medani on 2 September 1993 for holding a political meeting and sentenced and subjected to flogging for consumption of alcohol, the Government said that they had received a fair trial before a competent court.
وفيما يتعلق باﻷشخاص العشرة الذين أُلقي القبض عليهم في منزل كمال مكي مدني في ٢ أيلول/سبتمبر ٣٩٩١ لعقدهم اجتماعا سياسياً وحُكم عليهم وخضعوا للجلد لاستهلاكهم الكحول، قالت الحكومة إنهم قد تلقوا محاكمة عادلة أمام محكمة مختصة.

Yet Cairo remains restless, and the government fears another outpouring of support for democracy, as the judges have called for renewed nationwide demonstrations.
ويبدو أن حكومة مبارك تحاول الآن التراجع عن موقفها في أسرع وقت ممكن. فقد تمت تبرئة القاضي محمود مكي ، أما القاضي هشام البسطاويسي ، الذي أصيب بنوبة قلبية قبل ذلك بيوم واحد، فلم ينل سوى التأنيب الرسمي. لكن القاهرة ما زالت تشهد حالة من الاستياء والتوتر، وتخشى الحكومة انطلاق موجة أخرى من التأييد للديمقراطية، حيث دعا القضاة إلى تجديد المظاهرات على مستوى الأمة.

The case of Kamal Mekki Medani and other individuals, who were convicted for drinking alcohol in a fair trial and who were defended by more than 20 lawyers at Wad Medani and which resulted in the acquittal of 10 of the accused and the suspension of the sentences of the others pending appeal, were described as an unfair trial, simply because three of the accused were brothers of a " reliable source " of the Special Rapporteur.
وقضية كمال مكي مدني وآخرين، ممن وجهت اليهم في محاكمة عادلة تهمة احتساء الكحول، حيث دافع عنهم أكثر من ٢٠ محاميا في واد مدني، وهي قضية انتهت بتبرئة عشرة من المتهمين ووقف عقوبة اﻵخرين الى حين الاضطلاع بالاستئناف، قد وصفت بأنها محاكمة جائرة، وذلك لمجرد أن ثلاثة من المتهمين كانوا أشقاء " لمصدر موثوق به " من مصادر المقرر الخاص.
