1. In paragraph 9 of its resolution 60/109 B, the General Assembly took note of the proposals and actions of the Secretary-General to improve the effective and targeted delivery of public information activities, in accordance with the relevant resolutions and decisions of the Assembly, and requested the Secretary-General to report thereon to the Committee on Information at its twenty-eighth session.

With the aim of further improving the transparency of the budget proposals submitted to the Assembly and of facilitating their review by the legislative bodies, additional refinements have been included in the 2010/11 budget presentation format, as outlined further below (annex I to the present report summarizes the requests and decisions of the Assembly in resolution 61/276 and provides cross-references to the relevant paragraphs of the report).

9.42 The subprogramme is expected to achieve its objectives and expected accomplishments on the assumption that: (a) policymakers, both national and international, are fully involved in economic and social issues in the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council; (b) the international community is responsive to the recommendations and decisions of the Assembly and the Council.

(ii) The extent to which the mandates related to eliminating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, given to the Secretariat in resolutions and decisions of the Assembly, the Council and the Commission, have been fulfilled;

The present report, prepared in response to General Assembly resolution 58/126 of 19 December 2003, describes the current activities of the Department of Public Information to publicize the work and decisions of the Assembly and presents recommendations for developing a communications strategy to publicize them further.

It is our view that, although the streamlining of the activities of the Assembly -- especially with respect to meetings, clustering of agenda items, early election of the Assembly President and Main Committee Chairmen -- has proven useful, a lot still needs to be done, particularly with regard to the implementation of resolutions and decisions of the Assembly.
