The UNESCO secretariat pointed out that existing principles, best available scientific information and some of the experiences for the management of areas within national jurisdiction, both in the marine as well as terrestrial environment, can offer approaches and operational tools to implement coordinated actions beyond areas of national jurisdiction.

Reaffirms the need for States and competent international organizations to urgently consider ways to integrate and improve, based on the best available scientific information and in accordance with the Convention and related agreements and instruments, the management of risks to the marine biodiversity of seamounts, cold water corals, hydrothermal vents and certain other underwater features;

26. It was generally felt that further efforts were needed to improve the status of fish stocks, including by strengthening requirements for timely and accurate fisheries data reporting, requiring measures to be consistent with the best available scientific information and applying the precautionary approach as set forth in article 6 of the Agreement.

The commitments relating to greenhouse gases laid down in the Protocol should be reviewed at regular intervals to be determined and, if need be, further developed in the light of the ultimate objective enshrined in Article 2 of the Convention, taking into account the best available scientific information and assessments on climate change and its impacts, as well as relevant technical, social and economic information. 99. States also welcomed the adoption of the FAO International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas, and expressed their readiness to actively engage in the FAO programmes for the implementation of the Guidelines and would endeavour to collect available scientific information and take other necessary actions for this purpose.

Several regional fisheries management organizations described their strengthened commitment to adopt and fully implement conservation and management measures in accordance with the best available scientific information and the precautionary approach by general reference to the relevant mandate in their respective conventions.
