Despite the new flexibility provided by resolution 1079 (1996), the complexity of the situation in the region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (hereafter, “the Region”) means that every effort will have to be maximized in the coming months if its peaceful reintegration into Croatia is to succeed.

It summarizes the major activities of the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) in the region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (hereafter referred to as the region) since my last report of 1 October 1996 (S/1996/821), identifies the present challenges and future tasks of the mission and contains my recommendations.

The present report is submitted pursuant to paragraph 6 of Security Council resolution 1079 (1996) of 15 November 1996, in which the Council requested the Secretary-General to report on the situation in the region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (hereafter referred to as the region) which is under the administration of the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES).

Stresses the importance of demilitarization of the area, and in that context stresses further the importance of achieving bilateral agreements on demilitarization and a liberal border regime in the region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium, accompanied by appropriate confidence-building measures as suggested in the report of the Secretary-General of 23 June 1997;
