A. Implementation of the Plan of Action to Combat Desertification in 1991-1992

1. Takes note of the report of the Executive Director on the implementation of the Plan of Action to Combat Desertification in 1991 and 1992, and of the compatibility of the action taken with the recommendations of chapter 12 of Agenda 21;

In its decision 18/26, adopted on 26 May 1995, the Governing Council authorized the Executive Director to submit the present report, which includes her report on the implementation of the Plan of Action to Combat Desertification in the Sudano-Sahelian region, on behalf of the Council, through the Economic and Social Council, to the General Assembly at its fiftieth session.

The Governing Councils of UNEP and UNDP had reaffirmed the need to continue with the joint venture arrangement to support UNSO in connection with the implementation of the Plan of Action to Combat Desertification in the Sudano-Sahelian Region, which had proved to be an effective mechanism for strengthening collaboration between the two organizations on actions to combat desertification.
٩١ - ومضى قائلا إن مجلسي إدارة برنامج اﻷمم المتحدة للبيئة وبرنامج اﻷمم المتحدة اﻹنمائي أكدا من جديد الحاجة إلى مواصلة أسلوب المشاريع المشتركة لدعم المكتب فيما يتصل بتنفيذ خطة العمل لمكافحة التصحر في المنطقة السودانية - الساحلية، وهي خطة أثبتت أنها آلية فعالة لتعزيز التعاون بين المنظمتين في مجال اﻹجراءات الرامية إلى مكافحة التصحر.
