The report of the Secretary-General on improving the effective and efficient delivery of the mandates of development-related activities and revised estimates relating to the programme budget for the biennium 2008-2009 (A/62/708) contained attention to critical gaps in gender equality work in the process of strengthening the development pillar of the United Nations.

Mr. Sen (India) said that, considering that the world was facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the Secretary-General's modest proposals for strengthening the development pillar of the Secretariat, contained in his report on improving the delivery of the mandates of development-related activities (A/62/708), were timely.
