Mr. Natalegawa (Indonesia), emphasizing the complexity of the situation in Myanmar, recognized that the cooperation between the United Nations and the Government of Myanmar had improved and invited the authorities of the country to produce tangible results in the five areas of concern mentioned in the report of the Secretary-General.

In addition to the above, the Commission took note of the fact that the Government of Myanmar: had acceded to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949; had withdrawn several reservations it had entered concerning the Convention on the Rights of the Child; had observed cease-fire agreements with ethnic groups; had freed a certain number of political prisoners; and had received the Special Rapporteur for a visit to Myanmar.

In his report to the General Assembly (A/59/269), the Secretary-General indicated that the citizens of Myanmar had endured unnecessary social and economic hardship because of the absence of an all-inclusive process of democratization and national reconciliation in their country and that their predicament had been compounded by economic policies that had prevented the majority of them from improving their livelihoods.
4 - بيَّن الأمين العام في تقريره (A/59/269) المقدم إلى الجمعية العامة أن مواطني ميانمار قد عانوا مشاق اجتماعية واقتصادية هم في غنى عنها، وذلك لانعدام عملية تشرك الجميع لإحلال الديمقراطية وتحقيق المصالحة الوطنية. ومما زاد من سوء محنتهم، السياسات الاقتصادية التي منعت معظمهم من تحسين موارد رزقهم .

31. Mr. Ozawa (Japan) said that over the years the delegation of Myanmar had consistently engaged in dialogue and negotiations in the Committee, the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights regarding various resolutions related to the human rights situation in its country.
