313. We believe that the operational priority of the Economic and Social Council in its new form should be to focus on the coordination of economic and social activity and to accelerate completion of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area to move to the next stage namely, the establishment of an Arab customs union as a preliminary to a common Arab market.

(d) In order to assist with increasing the export capacity of member countries, ESCWA focused on intraregional export through monitoring the fulfilment by member countries of the scheduled implementation steps of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA).
(د) وللمساعدة على زيادة القدرة التصديرية للبلدان الأعضاء ركزت الإسكوا على التصدير الأقاليمي برصد وفاء البلدان الأعضاء بالخطوات التنفيذية المقررة لمنطقة التجارة الحرة العربية الكبرى.

26. A new vitality in regional and subregional cooperation emerged in January 2005 with the establishment of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area. The Area was created following an agreement made at the Arab League Summit in 1997 by 17 Arab League members.

25. Intraregional South-South cooperation has led to a significant increase in the level of trade among countries in the Arab States region: between 1998-2005, trade exports went from $14 billion to $41 billion and imports increased from $13 billion to $37 billion thanks to collaborative arrangements effected by the members of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab Maghreb Union.
25 - أسفر التعاون فيما بين بلدان الجنوب داخل المنطقة الواحدة إلى زيادة كبيرة في مستوى التجارة بين البلدان في منطقة الدول العربية: ففيما بين عامي 1998 و 2005، قفزت قيمة الصادرات التجارية من 14 بليون إلى 41 بليون دولار، وارتفعت الواردات من 13 بليون إلى 37 بليون دولار بفضل الترتيبات التعاونية التي اتخذتها الدول الأعضاء في منطقة التجارة الحرة العربية الكبرى ومجلس التعاون الخليجي واتحاد المغرب العربي.
