Public Information 50. From December 2002 to June 2003 the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat continued to initiate and coordinate activities within the framework of the World Public Information Campaign on Human Rights, ongoing since 1988, and the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education, 1995-2004.

The Plan of Action for the Decade focuses on stimulating and supporting local and national activities in human rights education and, in certain cases, takes over some activities previously initiated in the context of the World Public Information Campaign for Human Rights.

58. The Department of Public Information continued to initiate and coordinate activities within the framework of the World Public Information Campaign on Human Rights and the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education, 1995-2004.

108. On several occasions, the Commission on Human Rights has requested the Centre to coordinate activities of the World Public Information Campaign for Human Rights within the United Nations system, and to maintain liaison with Governments, regional and national institutions and individuals concerned in the development and implementation of those activities.

As part of the World Public Information Campaign for Human Rights, the Centre organizes more than 100 briefings on United Nations activities in the field of human rights issues each year for students, diplomats, journalists, public officials, teachers, academics and non-governmental organizations.

During 1993, the Department's network of 67 United Nations information centres (UNICs) and services (UNIS) played a significant role in furthering the objectives of the World Public Information Campaign on Human Rights and greatly expanded their outreach activities to media, NGOs, academics and others.
