At its seventeenth meeting, the Advisory Committee of the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas established an open-ended intersessional working group on noise, the terms of reference of which were revised at the eighteenth meeting of the Committee, in May 2011.

As at 3 February 2008, the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) is also applicable to the North East Atlantic and the Irish Sea, as also reflected in its new name (Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas; see also A/62/66/Add.1, para. 149).

Two regional agreements, concluded under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species, address the conservation of cetaceans: the 1991 Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) and the 1996 Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS).
