Following the adoption by the General Assembly of the so—called “partition resolution”, providing for the establishment of a Jewish State and an Arab State in Palestine, Israel had declared its independence on 14 May 1948.

Here it should be kept in mind that Israel was born in the United Nations under General Assembly resolution 181 (II) of 1947 and did not emerge through history. That partition resolution was a birth certificate not only for Israel but also for an independent Arab State of Palestine.

That resolution provided for the establishment of two States, one Arab and one Israeli, in Palestine. The successive resolutions of the United Nations laid the foundations for settling the Arab-Israeli conflict.
