The International Heliophysical Year 2007 and the International Space Weather Initiative have made significant progress in the installation of new instrumentation for the understanding of the impact of space weather on Earth's upper atmosphere, generating the needed new data streams that were useful for forecasting previously unobserved space weather in certain regions.

The Subcommittee noted with appreciation that Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Japan, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, the United States, SCOSTEP and the Office for Outer Space Affairs had reported on their achievements, projects, international space weather programmes and the activities that they had carried out in 2013 for a better understanding of the ionosphere and the impacts of space weather on Earth.

At its fifty-second session, the Committee noted with satisfaction the agreement reached by the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee at its forty-sixth session to consider, beginning at its forty-seventh session, a new agenda item entitled " International Space Weather Initiative " under a three-year workplan with specific focus on the effects of space weather on the Earth and its impact on, inter alia, communications and transport.
