Article 5 of the Personal Status Code stipulates that men and women who become engaged to one another must be of sound mind and aged 18 or over. A judge may authorize marriage of a person below this age, provided that he or she is at least 15 years old. The judge must stipulate in the directions which he issues for the purpose the grounds on which the marriage is considered beneficial.
