The Economic and Social Council, taking note of Commission on Human Rights resolution 1996/40 of 19 April 1996, authorizes the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities to meet for five working days prior to the forty-eighth session of the Sub-Commission.

Four working groups were scheduled to meet prior to the forty-eighth session of the Sub-Commission: the Working Group on Communications (see annotations to item 9), the Working Group on Indigenous Populations (see annotations to item 14), the Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery (see annotations to item 15) and the Working Group on Minorities (see annotations to item 17).
