His delegation hoped that the Committee would continue to deliberate on the report of the Group of Legal Experts on ensuring the accountability of United Nations experts while on mission, which was essential to the continued examination by the Organization of an issue that was indispensable to the promotion of the rule of law at the national and international levels.

At the Twenty-first Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the Group of Legal Experts on Liability reported that there was lack of clarity with regard to a number of matters, including the definition of damage, the actions to be taken by operators, the reimbursement of costs, unrepaired damage and the process for the settlement of disputes.82

The report of the Group of Legal Experts on ensuring the accountability of United Nations staff and experts on mission with respect to criminal acts committed in peacekeeping operations (A/60/980) was transmitted to the General Assembly in August 2006 and presented to the Chairman of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations for that Committee's consideration.

While she hoped that that the Sixth Committee would pursue its consideration of the report of the Group of Legal Experts on ensuring the accountability of United Nations staff and experts on mission with respect to criminal acts committed in peacekeeping operations (A/60/980), it would be premature to discuss the possibility of drafting a convention on the subject.
