لقد كانت سورية من أوائل الدول التي دعت إلى جعل منطقة الشرق الأوسط منطقة خالية من جميع أسلحة الدمار الشامل وفي مقدمتها الأسلحة النووية، وعملت بجد نحو تحقيق هذا الغرض، وساهمت بالعديد من المبادرات التي ترمي إلى تحقيق هذا الهدف.
