The representative of the Chemicals Branch of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics said that a number of UNEP offices were providing support to the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the environmentally sound management of mercury wastes. Work in various areas on mercury wastes was being implemented primarily by the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership, as outlined in document UNEP/CHW/OEWG/7/INF/20.

The Special Rapporteur participated in the First Continental Conference for Africa on the Environmentally Sound Management of Unwanted Stocks of Hazardous Wastes and their Prevention, convened by the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal in Rabat from 8 to 12 January 2001.

In developing the report, the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, which is considered to be a significant global framework for hazardous and other wastes, provided inputs on its activities.
