The intervening period since the third meeting of the Consultative Process has seen a heightened awareness and focus on oceans issues with the 20th anniversary of the opening for signature of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).

73. the third meeting of the Consultative Process took up once again the subject of the protection and preservation of the marine environment (previously discussed at the first meeting in 2000) in order to better coordinate the work of the Process with the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Many delegations expressed satisfaction that the outcome of the third meeting of the Consultative Process in 2002 had contributed to the success of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and to the inclusion of two chapters in the Johannesburg Plan relating to ocean affairs, namely, Chapter IV, paras. 30-36 on " Oceans, seas, islands and coastal areas " and Chapter VII on " Small island developing States " .
