At its substantive session of 2001, the Council adopted resolution 2001/27 on the implementation of General Assembly resolutions 50/227 and 52/12 B: improving the working methods of the functional commissions of the Council.

1. The main objective of the present report is to provide to the Economic and Social Council the results of the joint meetings held between the Bureau of the Council and the bureaux of its functional commissions, as well as some recommendations for improving not only the working methods of the functional commissions but also the coordination and collaboration among them.
١ - الهدف اﻷساسي من هـذا التقرير هـو عـرض نتائج الاجتماعـات المشتركـة المعقودة بين مكتب المجلس الاقتصادي والاجتماعي ومكاتب لجانه الفنية، وكذلك عرض بعض التوصيات الرامية إلى تحسين أساليب عمل اللجان الفنية وزيادة التنسيق والتعاون فيما بينها.

8. The meetings, in which all Bureau and bureaux members showed considerable interest, allowed an open and fruitful dialogue that aimed to highlight achievements and identify shortcomings in the working methods of the functional commissions and coordination among them and with the Council.
٨ - أتاحت الاجتماعـات التي أظهر حيالها جميـع أعضاء مكتب المجلس ومكاتب اللجـان اهتمامـا بالغـا، إجراء حوار مفتوح ومثمر ﻹبراز المنجزات والوقوف على أوجه القصور التي تعتري أساليب عمل اللجان الفنية وكفالة التنسيق فيما بين هذه اللجان، وبينها وبين المجلس.

An addendum to that report (E/1996/97/Add.1) provided further information on the working methods of the functional commissions and expert groups of the Council.

5. Further, the Bureau was briefed by the secretariat on possible effects of the ongoing Economic and Social Council reform process on the working methods of the functional commissions and on current working methods of other United Nations bodies.
