As far as In the view of UN-HABITAT is concerned one of the most successful outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development was the inclusion of " adequate shelter " to the list of priorities in the Johannesburg Declaration.

The extraordinary achievement of getting " adequate shelter " mentioned as a priority concern in the Johannesburg Declaration was due to the constructive relationship between the Executive Director and her team, members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to UN-HABITAT and concerned government representatives.

In September 2002, the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development2 re-emphasized, in its paragraph 18, the importance of adequate shelter, clean water and sanitation as key basic requirements placing the area of responsibility assigned to UN-HABITAT at the top of the development agenda.

That limitation was recognized at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 (the Earth Summit) and was embodied in the Rio Principles.
