41. Sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remained severe during the reporting period, with rapes and other forms of sexual violence perpetrated by armed groups, security forces and, increasingly, civilians.

The independent expert calls on Mali to protect the independence of its judiciary and to provide it with the material, technical and logistic means -- which are seriously lacking -- to conduct thorough investigations into the crimes committed by armed groups and Malian armed forces during the crisis in the north.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women notes that in South Kivu province alone, where 4,500 cases of sexual violence were recorded in the first six months of 2007, acts of rape and sexual slavery perpetrated by armed groups were aimed at the complete physical and psychological destruction of women, with implications for the entire society.
وتلاحظ المقررة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة المعنية بالعنف ضد المرأة أنه، في مقاطعة كيفو الجنوبية لوحدها حيث سجلت 500 4 حالة من العنف الجنسي في الأشهر الستة الأولى لعام 2007، كان الهدف من أفعال الاغتصاب والاستعباد الجنسي التي ارتكبتها الجماعات المسلحة هو التدمير البدني والنفسي الكامل للمرأة بما ينطوي عليه ذلك من مضاعفات على المجتمع بأكمله.

32. Despite the increased efforts by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, supported by the international community including MONUSCO, to arrest and try perpetrators of sexual violence, a significant number of cases of sexual violence committed by armed groups and FARDC elements have not been followed up through judicial means.
