١٣ - ويعد استحداث معايير تصنيفية مقبولة أمرا مهما في التنبؤ باﻵثار، وضروريا في وصف النطاق الجغرافي لﻷنواع، ولا غنى عنه في إجراء التجارب في المواقع الطبيعية بهدف دراسة المسائل المهمة في مجال التنبؤ بأثر استخراج العقيدات المؤلفة من عدة معادن على طوائف اﻷحياء.

However, it has so far proved difficult to quantify the threat of nodule mining to biodiversity (in particular, the likelihood of species extinctions) without better knowledge of the following:

7. During the workshop, participants made a number of recommendations. These recommendations were aimed at helping to fill the gaps in the international community's knowledge base for the purposes of managing deep-seabed polymetallic nodule mining so as to prevent serious harm to the marine environment and assist in defraying the high costs of acquiring information on the deep-sea ecosystems.
٧ - خلال حلقة العمل، قدم المشاركون عددا من التوصيات التي تهدف إلى المساعدة على سد ثغرات اﻷساس المعرفي للمجتمع الدولي بغرض توجيه أنشطة استخراج العقيدات المؤلفة من عدة معادن من قاع البحار العميقة، بحيث يمكن تفادي إلحاق ضرر جسيم بالبيئة البحرية والمساعدة على تحمل التكاليف الباهظة للحصول على المعلومات المتعلقة بالنظم البيئية ﻷعماق البحار.

7. Until biodiversity levels and species ranges in the Pacific nodule province are much better understood, the impacts of nodule mining (or other large-scale anthropogenic disturbances) on deep-sea biodiversity cannot be predicted.
7 - وإلى أن تُفهم مستويات التنوع الأحيائي ونطاقات الأنواع في منطقة العقيدات بالمحيط الهادئ بشكل أفضل بكثير، فإنه لا يمكن التنبؤ بآثار استخراج العقيدات (أو الاضطرابات الأخرى التي يسببها الإنسان على نطاق واسع) على التنوع الأحيائي في أعماق البحار.

Nevertheless, applying the precautionary approach, the results of the study suggest that where data are inadequate to exclude potential harm to the environment from a particular human activity (in this case nodule mining), the activity should be conservatively managed so as to ensure environmental protection.

16. nodule mining is expected to produce two types of sediment plumes that may impact benthic habitats: (a) near-bottom plumes created by tailings from the mining head during nodule extraction from the sea floor; and (b) plumes in the water column derived from sediments attached to nodules during lifting from the seabed (Oebius et al. 2001).
