Paragraph 3 of decision 8/COP.9 requests the UNCCD Executive Secretary to continue coordinating with the secretariats of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through the Joint Liaison Group (JLG), to facilitate exchanges of information.

The 2005 JIU report already recommended a revamping of this subsidiary body, and a decision was taken at COP 8 leading to ongoing changes in the functioning of the CST and its networking with external scientific networks, supported by the corporate review process undertaken by the UNCCD Executive Secretary in this regard.

1. Opening of the Conference by Executive Secretary of CCD
١- افتتاح المؤتمر من قبل اﻷمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية مكافحة التصحر

4. Invites the Executive Secretaries of the UNCCD and the CBD to strengthen the Joint Work Programme, including their efforts to achieve the relevant 2010 biodiversity targets, and welcomes the attention to be given to this matter by the COP to the CBD at its eighth session to be held in Curitiba, Brazil, in March 2006;

9. Further requests the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD and the Chief Executive Officer/Chairperson of the GEF as a financial mechanism of the Convention to report to the COP at its ninth session on the implementation of this decision.
9- يرجو كذلك من الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية مكافحة التصحر وكبير الموظفين التنفيذيين في مرفق البيئة العالمية/رئيس المرفق بوصفه آلية مالية من آليات الاتفاقية أن يقدما إلى الدورة التاسعة لمؤتمر الأطراف تقريراً عن تنفيذ هذا المقرر.

During this meeting the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD delivered a statement in which he presented recent key developments in the collaboration between the GEF and the Convention, including the decision to open a focal area on land degradation, and the development of an operational programme to translate it into action and ultimately make the GEF a financial mechanism of the Convention.
وخلال الاجتماع، أدلى الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية مكافحة التصحر ببيان قدم فيه آخر التطورات الرئيسية في مجال التعاون بين مرفق البيئة العالمية والاتفاقية، بما في ذلك المقرر المتعلق بفتح مجال عمل رئيسي بشأن تردي الأراضي، وتنفيذه لبرنامج تشغيلي، وفي النهاية جعل مرفق البيئة العالمية آلية مالية للاتفاقية.

The General Assembly, by designating the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD as focal point of the Year, and including the relevant bodies of the United Nations, especially UNEP, UNDP and IFAD, made a clear indication of the need for partnership in the implementation of this Convention.

18. With respect to the draft MoU, the GEF secretariat introduced the document jointly prepared by the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD and the CEO and Chairman of the GEF.
18- وبخصوص مشروع مذكرة التفاهم، قدمت الأمانة وثيقة اشترك في إعدادها الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية مكافحة التصحر وكبير الموظفين التنفيذيين ورئيس مرفق البيئة العالمية.

The decision on this matter was nevertheless adopted by the Council, requesting the CEO/CEO and Chairman of the GEF to transmit the MoU to the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD for submission to the seventh session of the COP to the UNCCD with a view to its consideration and adoption by the COP in order to support collaboration with, and implementation of the Convention.

The Executive Secretary of the CBD, in close collaboration with the Executive Secretaries of the UNCCD and the UNFCCC and in consultation with the Secretariat of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), convened a Regional Workshop for Africa on Synergies in implementing the Programmes of Work on Dry and Sub-humid Lands and Agricultural Biodiversity, in Gaborone, Botswana.
10- وقام الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي، بالتعاون الوثيق مع الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية مكافحة التصحر والأمين التنفيذي للاتفاقية الإطارية بشأن تغير المناخ، وبالتشاور مع أمانة مرفق البيئة العالمية، بعقد حلقة عمل إقليمية لأفريقيا بشأن أوجه التآزر في تنفيذ برامج العمل المتعلقة بالأراضي الجافة وشبه الرطبة والتنوع البيولوجي الزراعي، وعقدت حلقة العمل هذه في غابرون في بوتسوانا.
