The participants representing 34 mayors adopted the Curitiba Declaration on cities and Biodiversity, which will be submitted to the ninth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity, together with the results of the municipal pre-conference to be held in Bonn in May 2008.

Further to Conference of the Parties decision IX/28, in which the Conference recognized the need to engage cities and local authorities in the implementation of the Convention, the second Curitiba Meeting on cities and Biodiversity was convened in January 2010 with a view to developing a multi-year plan of action on cities, local authorities and biodiversity.

Aware of the critical importance of urbanization and local action on biodiversity, the Conference of the Parties also endorsed a plan of action on cities and biodiversity (decision X/22), which has been developed through several meetings of the Global Partnership on cities and Biodiversity since 2006.

The International Day also coincided with two workshops, held from 21 to 24 May 2014, in Qingdao, China: (a) a regional workshop for East, South and South-east Asia on cities and biodiversity; and (b) a regional workshop for East, South and South-east Asia on South-South cooperation on biodiversity for development.

UN-Habitat undertook a consultancy on urban biodiversity, ecosystem services and wetlandsbased adaptation in cities that reviewed the state of existing literature on cities and biodiversity, collected and analysed 50 related case studies and critiqued UN-Habitat vis-à-vis the relevant institutional landscape with recommendations for the coming biennium.
