25. Mr. Ritter (Liechtenstein), noting the Committee's particular attention at its previous session to specific forms of violence against women, said that the emphasis was probably not simply a sign of growing awareness that such violence was a major impediment to the advancement of women but also a reflection of the lack of a holistic understanding of the problem.

They presented conference delegates with almost half a million signatures from 128 countries demanding that such violence be recognized as a violation of women's human rights, and ran a global tribunal in which women's testimonies, including cases of violence from around the world, were presented in a human rights framework.11
