Monaco is the depositary of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area.

Two regional agreements, concluded under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species, address the conservation of cetaceans: the 1991 Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) and the 1996 Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS).

176. In November 2010, the Meeting of Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Neighbouring Atlantic Area adopted resolution 4.15 on marine protected areas of importance for cetaceans conservation.

225. An Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area was adopted at an intergovernmental meeting held in Monaco in November 1996, under the aegis of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.
٢٢٥ - واعتمد اتفاق متعلق بحفظ الحيتانيات في البحر اﻷسود والبحر اﻷبيض المتوسط ومنطقة المحيط اﻷطلسي المتاخمة، في اجتماع حكومي دولي عقد في موناكو في تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر ١٩٩٦، تحت رعاية اتفاقية حفظ أنواع الحيوانات البرية المهاجرة.

" 8. The Action Plan for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean was adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution, at its 7th ordinary meeting held at Cairo in October 1991.

" 10. The first meeting of the ad hoc Group of Experts on the Action Plan for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean was convened by RAC/SPA in parallel with the Eighth Annual Conference of the European Cetacean Society (Montpellier, France, 3-6 March 1994).

The Commission's activities relate mostly to the Conservation of Cetaceans and the sustainable use of whale stocks through consumptive or non-consumptive use (such as whale watching).

150. In November 2006, the fourth meeting of the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS adopted a number of recommendations for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean.

112. At the regional level, the issue of anthropogenic noise and cetaceans was considered at the Fourth Meeting of the Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Neighbouring Atlantic Area, held in November 2010.

The second Meeting of the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding for the Conservation of Cetaceans and their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region, held in July 2009, agreed, inter alia, a four-year action plan outlining priorities for the conservation of whales and dolphins in the region.

In this respect, implementation of the regional agreements concluded under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, such as the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area and the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas, is crucial.
