The Preparatory Committee, in paragraph 153 of the report on its 1997 session,1 agreed that as part of its programme of regular activities in 1998 and 1999, the United Nations Programme on Space Applications should organize regional preparatory meetings for the Conference.

Following up the above-mentioned action by the Committee and the General Assembly, the Office for Outer Space Affairs, within the framework of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications, began to organize the regional preparatory meetings for Africa, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean in consultation with the Governments of Tunisia, Malaysia and Chile, respectively.
٩ - ومتابعة للاجراءات المشار اليها أعلاه التي اتخذتها اللجنة والجمعية العامة ، بدأ مكتب شؤون الفضاء الخارجي ، في اطار برنامج اﻷمم المتحدة للتطبيقات الفضائية ، في تنظيم اجتماعات تحضيرية اقليمية في افريقيا وآسيا والمحيط الهادىء وأمريكا اللاتينية ومنطقة البحر الكاريبي للتشاور مع حكومات تونس وماليزيا وشيلي ، على التوالي .

As part of the preparatory work for the UNISPACE III Conference, the Office for Outer Space Affairs will organize, with support from ESA, regional conferences and meetings (see paragraph 273 below) and coordinate other regional preparatory activities as necessary.
