5. At its sixth session, the CSTD will consider technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society.

Continuous marginalization of the African economies and their failure to integrate into the global market led to the stagnation of their industries and a dangerously growing gap in technology development and capacity-building.

Welcoming the work of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development on its theme on " technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society " , and noting the findings, which indicate, inter alia, the following:

9. Three panel meetings on various aspects of technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness were held in 2002−2003 with support from the CSTD 2002−2003 budget.

3. Decides to choose as the substantive theme for the intersessional period 2001-2003, " technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society " .

2. Substantive theme: " technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society " .

Questions of participation and access with regard to ICT will be a priority theme of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2003, and the Commission on Science and Technology for Development will carry out work on technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society during its next inter-sessional period.

2. Substantive theme: " technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society " , with particular attention to information and communication technologies (ICTs) as pervasive technologies of global impact, wide application and growing potential.
2- الموضوع الفني: " تطوير التكنولوجيا وبناء القدرات تعزيزاً للقدرة على التنافس في المجتمع الرقمي " ، مع الاهتمام بصفة خاصة بتكنولوجيات المعلومات والاتصال باعتبارها تكنولوجيات واسعة الانتشار وذات تأثير عالمي وتطبيق واسع وإمكانات متزايدة.

11. In response to the Commission's decision on the substantive theme, namely " technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society " , and other activities for the 2001−2003 inter-sessional period, four panel meetings were organized:
11- ورداً على قرار اللجنة المتعلق بالموضوع الفني، وهـو " تطوير التكنولوجيا وبناء القدرات تعزيزاً للقدرة التنافسية في المجتمع الرقمي " ، والأنشطة الأخرى المقرر إجراؤها خلال الفترة 2001-2003 الفاصلة بين الدورتين، نُظمت أربعة اجتماعات للأفرقة على النحو التالي:

8. In carrying out its inter-sessional work, the Commission held its first Bureau meeting and a preparatory meeting of the panels on technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in Geneva from 13 to 14 November 2001.
8- عقدت اللجنة في إطار الاضطلاع بعملها خلال الفترة الفاصلة بين الدورتين في الفترة من 13 إلى 14 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2001 الاجتماع الأول لمكتبها واجتماعاً تحضيرياً للأفرقة بشأن تطوير التكنولوجيا وبناء القدرات لأغراض تعزيز القدرة التنافسية في جنيف.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development should formulate guidelines on increasing the participation of women in IT during the course of its work on its new substantive theme: technology development and capacity building for competitiveness in a digital economy.
