Mr. PHANIT (Thailand) said that his delegation supported the statement made by the representative of Costa Rica on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, and wished to reiterate its belief that the budgetary process of the United Nations should continue to be governed by the provisions of General Assembly resolution 41/213 of 19 December 1986.

11. The CHAIRPERSON said that the Group of Asian States had nominated Mr. PHANIT (Thailand), the Group of Eastern European States had nominated Mr. Gorita (Romania) and the Group of Western European and Other States had nominated Mr. Willis (Australia) for the office of Vice-Chairperson.

Mr. PHANIT (Thailand), after commending the reports of the Secretary-General, said that his delegation supported the work of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and stressed the need to introduce measures to reduce the backlog of that Committee's work, such as increasing the number of meetings.

Mr. PHANIT (Thailand) said that his delegation associated itself with the views expressed by the representative of Costa Rica on behalf of the Group of 77 and China and regretted that the High-Level Open-Ended Working Group on the Financial Situation of the United Nations had been unable to reach a consensus on any practical short-term solutions to the current financial problems faced by the Organization.
٦٠ - السيد فانيت )تايلند(: قال إن وفده يوافق على اﻵراء التي أعرب عنها ممثل كوستاريكا بالنيابة عن مجموعة اﻟ ٧٧ والصين ثم أعرب عن اسفه إزاء عدم تمكن الفريق العامل الرفيع المستوى المفتوح باب العضوية المعني بالحالة المالية لﻷمم المتحدة من التوصل إلى توافق في اﻵراء بشأن أي حلول عملية قصيرة اﻷجل للمشاكل المالية الراهنة التي تواجه المنظمة.

Mr. PHANIT (Thailand) said that, in the decolonization process, there was no alternative to the principle of self-determination and reaffirmed that Thailand believed in the legitimacy of all options for self-determination consistent with General Assembly resolutions 1514 (XV) and 1541 (XV). However, it was also important to be flexible and realistic in efforts to complete the process of decolonization.
