The secretariat works closely with the Regional Plant Protection Officers to facilitate and coordinate technical assistance activities relevant to the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention in their respective regions and to ensure that such activities are incorporated into their annual work plans.

In Asia, the Regional Plant Protection Officer was instrumental in organizing national workshops in China and Sri Lanka, in December 2004 and April 2005, respectively, and in establishing contacts at the national level in Pakistan and Viet Nam to facilitate additional subregional meetings.
