During the 10-year follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+10), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization promoted a new concept of Internet universality, encompassing a free, rights-based, open and accessible Internet.

In this connection, I welcome the new structure of the agenda and multi-year programme of work of the Commission for Social Development for the years 1997-2000, having the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development as its substantive theme.
وفي هذا الصدد أرحب بالهيكل الجديد لجدول أعمال لجنة التنمية الاجتماعية وبرنامج عملها للسنوات ١٩٩٧-٢٠٠٠، وموضوعه اﻷساسي متابعة القمة العالمية للتنمية الاجتماعية.

Still in the context of cooperation, I wish to mention the meeting organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the United Nations Secretariat, the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development and the United Nations Development Programme in the framework of the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development.
وفي إطار التعاون أيضا، أود أن أنوه بالاجتماع الذي اشترك في تنظيمه الاتحاد البرلماني الدولي واﻷمانة العامة لﻷمم المتحدة وإدارة تنسيــق السياســات والتنمية المستدامة وبرنامج اﻷمم المتحدة اﻹنمائي، فــي إطــار متابعة القمة العالمية للتنمية الاجتماعية.

27. The Commission for Social Development, inter alia, recognized that it should be considered by the Economic and Social Council as the body with a central role in the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development.
٢٧ - سلﱠمت لجنة التنمية الاجتماعية بأمور شتى من بينها ضرورة أن ينظر اليها المجلس الاقتصادي والاجتماعي على أنها الهيئة التي تضطلع بدور محوري في متابعة القمة العالمية للتنمية الاجتماعية.

The proposal that the Standing Committee carry out a more niche-specific role with respect to poverty alleviation makes sense when viewed in the context of the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development.
٥١ - وأما اقتراح أن تضطلع اللجنة الدائمة بدور يكون أقرب إلى الدور المتخصص في مجال تخفيف الفقر فهو اقتراح ذو معنى عندما ينظر إليه في سياق متابعة القمة العالمية للتنمية الاجتماعية.
