45. Recommendations on mainstreaming a gender perspective in all policies and programmes and in planning and budgeting are as follows:

12. Mrs. Ben Yedder (Tunisia) underscored the decisive role played by the Organization in furthering the advancement of women and supported the mainstreaming of a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system.

62. In a comprehensive resolution on the rights of the child, the Commission underlined the need for mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes relating to children, and it also dealt specifically with the situation of the girl child (resolution 1998/76).

7A.39 A particularly important dimension of the subprogramme is the comprehensive and integrated mainstreaming of gender issues, which has been given more leverage through the adoption by the Economic and Social Council of agreed conclusions on mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system and of the system-wide medium-term plan for the advancement of women.

31. In the communiqué, Governments recognized that productive employment plays a central role in poverty eradication, and that the mainstreaming of a gender perspective into all policies aimed at poverty eradication and employment creation, including through gender impact analysis, is all the more crucial since women constitute the majority of people living in poverty.

5. In the period under review, the activities aimed at the implementation of the Platform for Action at the international level focused on two areas: (a) mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system; and (b) efforts to enhance the capacity of the Organization and the United Nations system to support the ongoing follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women.

26. The importance of integrating a gender perspective in all policies and programmes was emphasized, including creating awareness of the impact of various policy measures and programmes for sustainable development on women as well as men.

Progress in mainstreaming a gender perspective in all policies and programmes requires the availability of and access to information about gender concepts and their relevance for a sector or an issue, as well as data and information to incorporate gender considerations in research and analysis, policy and programme development, decision-making, and monitoring and evaluation.11
