While the causes of the conflict are multiple and complex, they can be summed up as being rooted in racial, ethnic, cultural and religious differences characterized by gross disparities between the Arabized Muslim north, comprising one third of the country in terms of land and population, and the south, which is more indigenously African in terms of race, ethnicity and religion, with a mostly Christianized, modern elite.
وبالرغم من تشعّب وتعقّد أسباب الصراع، يمكن تلخيصها في أنها تنبثق من الاختلافات العرقية والإثنية والثقافية والدينية، التي يميزها التباين الصريح بين الشمال العربي المسلم الذي يضم ثلث البلد من حيث الأرض والسكان، والجنوب الأكثر انتماء إلى أفريقيا عرقياً واثنياً ودينياً مع وجود نخبة متمدنة مسيحية في غالبها.
