In a letter dated 25 November 2008, addressed to the President of the Council (A/HRC/S8/1), the Representative of the Permanent Mission of France, on behalf of the European Union, requested the convening of a special session of the Council on 28 November 2008 to consider and take action on the situation of human rights in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

By a letter dated 30 June 2006, addressed to the President of the Human Rights Council, the Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, on behalf of the Group of Arab States, requested that a special session of the Council be convened immediately " to consider the latest escalation of the situation in the Palestinian and other occupied Arab territories " (see document A/HRC/S-1/1).

On 13 December 2006, a special session of the Council was held on Darfur and a resolution adopted, in which the Council called for a high-level mission to travel to Darfur to assess the human rights situation and the needs of the Sudan in that regard.
وفي 13 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2006، عقد المجلس دورة استثنائية بشأن دارفور واعتمد قراراً دعا فيه إلى إيفاد بعثة رفيعة المستوى إلى دارفور بهدف تقييم حالة حقوق الإنسان واحتياجات السودان في هذا الصدد.
