Malaysia was elected as the new Chair of the Asia South-East and Pacific South-West Division of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names during the 17th divisional meeting, held in Sydney, Australia, on 10 April 2010.

An expert from the Asia South-East and Pacific South-West Division also commented on Indonesia's programme on geographical names and its committee, which worked at the national, provincial and district levels in the field of names standardization (names collection and training).

It was co-organized by the National Institute of Technology at Malang (ITN Malang) under the auspices of the Asia South-East and Pacific South-West Division and the Working Group on Training Courses in Toponymy of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names.

The paper outlined the process and benefits of marketing the package directly to each of the state curriculum authorities in Australia and concluded that the ongoing project was proving successful.

The Chair presented the document entitled " Statute and rules of procedure of the Group of Experts on Geographical Names " (GEGN 27/3) and mentioned changes already being implemented, such as the separation of the Asia South-East and Pacific South-West Division into the Asia South-East Division and the Pacific South-West Division, and other probable changes to come.
