The Committee was informed that the reform process would entail the refocusing of ECA's work programme around two broad regional priorities as follows:

43. ECA's work under this subprogramme aims at strengthening and sustaining an African information society, as well as developing capacity for the formulation, adaptation and implementation of appropriate science and technology policies and programmes.

49. With 34 out of the world's 50 Least Developed Countries in Africa, addressing the special needs of this group of countries remains a priority area for ECA's work.

37. Another highlight of the year was ECA's work on trade and environment which seeks to promote sustainable development by enhancing capacity of governments, businesses and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into trade and financial policies and practices.

38. ECA's work under this subprogramme has led to increased awareness of the need to integrate environmental considerations into mainstream national economic policies and plans for achieving the MDGs and poverty reduction.
38 - وأفضى عمل اللجنة الاقتصادية لأفريقيا في إطار هذا البرنامج الفرعي إلى زيادة الوعي بشأن ضرورة إدماج الاعتبارات البيئية في السياسات والخطط الاقتصادية الوطنية الرئيسية من أجل تحقيق الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية والحد من الفقر.

66. The objective of ECA's work under this subprogramme is to improve the production, dissemination and use of key demographic, social, economic and environmental statistics, including the MDG indicators, in accordance with internationally agreed standards and good practice, and in order to promote the implementation of the new Reference Regional Strategic Framework for Statistical Capacity-building in Africa.
يكمن هدف عمل اللجنة الاقتصادية لأفريقيا ضمن هذا البرنامج الفرعي في تحسين إنتاج ونشر استخدام الإحصاءات الديموغرافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والبيئية الرئيسية، بما فيها مؤشرات الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية، وفقا للمعايير وأفضل الممارسات المتفق عليها دولياً، بغرض تعزيز تنفيذ إطار العمل الاستراتيجي الإقليمي المرجعي لبناء القدرات الإحصائية في أفريقيا.

17. The objective of ECA's work under this subprogramme is to strengthen the capacity of member States to design and implement appropriate economic and social policies and strategies to achieve sustained economic growth for poverty reduction.
17 - الهدف من عمل اللجنة الاقتصادية لأفريقيا في إطار هذا البرنامج الفرعي هو تعزيز قدرات البلدان الأعضاء على وضع وتنفيذ السياسات والاستراتيجيات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية الملائمة الرامية إلى تحقيق النمو الاقتصادي المطرد من أجل الحد من الفقر .

To that end, ECA's work under this subprogramme focused on three broad interrelated areas as follows: Harnessing Information Technology for Development - implementing the African Information Society Initiative (AISI); Strengthening Geo-information systems for sustainable development; and Improving access to information and knowledge through enhanced library services.
