II. Multifaceted nature of violence against indigenous women

The reported estimates of violence against indigenous women and girls in indigenous communities are widely understood to be underestimated.

It is important to recognize that a discussion about gendered interpersonal violence is not only about domestic violence but also about the racialized sexual violence that indigenous women experience, which often goes unreported or underreported as a result of the normalization and condoning of violence against indigenous women in both indigenous communities and society at large.
