ربما كان السادات قد يختار تأمين التحالف مع أميركا دون الدخول في سلام مع إسرائيل لو كان ذلك بوسعه. إلا أن ذلك لم يكن وارداً، كما أدرك السادات . ففي العام 1974 حين اختلف المشير الجمسي ، مهندس حرب أكتوبر 1973، مع السادات بسبب مرونته في محادثات فض الاشتباك مع إسرائيل، سارع الرئيس المصري إلى تهدئته بقوله: "لا تنس أيها المشير أننا نتحدث هنا عن سلام مع الأميركيين!".
