Following the signing of the peace accord in the Middle East, the Secretary-General, in his letter dated 10 September 1999 to the Security Council (S/1999/983), informed the Council of his intention to appoint Terje Roed-Larsen of Norway as the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and his Personal Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority, as at 1 October 1999.

The Security Council continued to consider the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, on a regular basis, in particular with monthly briefings by the Secretary-General, his Personal Representative and Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larsen, or senior Secretariat staff.
