BERLIN – Revolutions, it is said, almost always devour their children. Obviously, this is also true for the “color revolutions” – first in Georgia, and now in Ukraine, where President Viktor Yushchenko, the hero of the “Orange Revolution” in 2004, was voted out in the first round of presidential elections a few weeks ago, having received less than 6% of the vote.

Russia also needs a national security strategy to complement its political and economic renewal. All stick and little carrot has failed to quell Chechen nationalism, and President Vladimir Putin’s similarly heavy-handed attempts to control Russia’s so-called “near abroad” – as in Ukraine during the Orange Revolution – have proven no more successful.

It was Russia’s attempt, only two and a half years ago, to install Yanukovych as President via rampant electoral fraud that touched off the “Orange Revolution.” After months of struggle, Yushchenko rightfully claimed the presidency.
