This dual role necessitates the mainstreaming of the regional dimension in the overall work of the United Nations at the global level and making efficient use of the comparative advantages of the regional commissions as a way to ensure coherence of the Organization's activities, particularly those in support of the Millennium Declaration and global conferences and summits, at the regional level.

The present report updates the Economic and Social Council on two cross-cutting issues relating to the regional commissions, namely, mainstreaming the regional dimension in the work of the United Nations and enhancing the coherence of the United Nations activities at the regional level in accordance with the guidance given in annex III to Council resolution 1998/46 of 31 July 1998.
يقدم هذا التقرير للمجلس الاقتصادي والاجتماعي ما استجد بشأن مسألتين متداخلتين متصلتين باللجان الإقليمية، هما إدماج البعد الإقليمي في أعمال الأمم المتحدة وزيادة تجانس أنشطة الأمم المتحدة على الصعيد الإقليمي، عملا بالتوجيه الوارد في المرفق الثالث من قرار المجلس 1998/46 المؤرخ 31 تموز/يوليه 1998.

The commissions are also actively pursuing their efforts to integrate the regional dimension in the common country assessment/United Nations Development Assistance Framework processes, in collaboration with the resident coordinator system and the United Nations country teams.

2. The meetings of the Executive Secretaries1 of the regional commissions focused on progress towards the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including those contained in the Millennium Declaration; as well as the reform initiatives of the Secretary-General for mainstreaming the regional dimension in the overall work of the United Nations in the economic and social sectors.
2 - ركزت اجتماعات الأمناء التنفيذيين() للجان الإقليمية على التقدم المحرز في مجال بلوغ الأهداف الإنمائية المتفق عليها دوليا، بما فيها الأهداف الواردة في إعلان الألفية؛ وكذا مبادرات الإصلاح التي اتخذها الأمين العام من أجل إدماج البعد الإقليمي في الأعمال العامة للأمم المتحدة في القطاعين الاقتصادي والاجتماعي.

Such meetings should facilitate the better integration of the regional dimension in the programme frameworks or its participants, foster collaboration in technical cooperation projects, share knowledge derived from management experiences, result in better coordinated policies and activities and build synergies with partner organizations for achieving a coherent regional development agenda.
