The decision of the special session of the ninth session of the Forum on forest financing had been taken at a critical time, when the pivotal role of forests in advancing sustainable development agendas and the global efforts to fight climate change were being recognized more than ever before.

17. Mr. Ruales explained that the Organization-Led Initiative was organized in response to two invitations by the Forum to the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, in the resolution of the special session of the ninth session of the Forum, and the resolution adopted at the ninth session.

8. The secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests introduced the relevant documents to the session and a compact disc was distributed to all experts, which included all the documents of the Forum relevant to forest financing since the special session of the ninth session.

65. Owing to their important role, the resolution adopted at the special session of the ninth session of the Forum specifically requested that the decision on forest financing at the tenth session of the Forum should take into account the work of forest-related financing mechanisms and processes.

For its consideration of item 13 (i), the Council had before it the report of the United Nations Forum on Forests on the special session of the ninth session (E/2009/118-E/CN.18/SS/2009/2).

7. At its 47th meeting, on 15 December, the Council adopted the draft decision contained in the report of the United Nations Forum on Forests on the special session of the ninth session (E/2009/118-E/CN.18/SS/2009/2, chap. I, sect. A).
